On Thursday, May 13, I'll be leaving my home in Iowa for 3 weeks in Guatemala. The first week and the last week, I'll be working with a team of people in poor villages, building simple pole and tin homes for families there. They are not fancy homes, but are a significant improvement to the dirt floors and leaky cornstalk walls they are replacing. Eventually, I hope to post some photos of our work so you'll know and see what our team is doing in the villages and orphanages.
I also have agricultural interests in Guatemala, and I will be exploring them during the middle of my three weeks there. I am particularly interested in helping those folks better manage their pigs, goats, chickens, cows and assorted other meat animals. I'll share some of my ideas about that, and what I learn, over the next month.
There will be other people traveling with me. My nephew, Ryan Johnston, works for a church in Memphis and puts the teams together for building the homes. Ryan's dad and my brother, Denny Johnston, is the real farmer in the family and is equally interested in the farm animal project. And two young people, brother and sister Coulter and Keeci Goodman from my church in Des Moines, Iowa, are with me for the duration. Both speak Spanish (I don't), so they will be valuable travel companions. I'll share more about them, and pictures (hopefully) of us as our adventure unfolds, and as we learn about Internet connectivity in Guatemala. We'll talk again soon!
